I'd consider myself a pretty thorough Trek expert, but not so much with Diamondback. So you can decide whether or not to trust this answer. The Trek FX line is brand new. I can tell you from much experience that when Trek makes a bike, it's gonna run real smooth and everything's gonna be clicking just right. They feel great. So in terms of the companies, you're not gonna see many pros riding Diamondbacks, I feel that Trek is a class above. (Multiple world championship teams ride with them.) In terms of the actual models, I'd place durability with the Trek, because of their great rep and for some technical, part-related resons. The DB may be MARGINALLY faster (parts), but the speed comes from you. Comfort goes to the Trek for sure for a number of parts. Safety? Today's bikes are made extremely safe. 95% of the safety is in wearing your helmet. This is getting long, so if you want to know the part details, follow up and I'd be happy to explain. Good luck and have fun!

From a retailer's perspective, Trek is generally a better brand then Diamondack. In terms of comfort and size, it is all a matter of getting fit on the bike correctly. This is something that a good bike shop will be able to help with. All bikes are safe provided that you wear a helmet and be careful. Speed is in the legs. :) In terms of brands though, Trek is a company that builds a quality product throughout the full specturm of levels in the marketplace. They work exclusively through qualified bike shops with expert mechanics and sales reps. Diamondback does not do that. You will see their bikes in Sports Authority, *****, and other mass market stores. They do not have the level of customer service that Trek does. As a result of their increased production, their quality has begun to slip.

I just bought a Trek 7.2 FX today and I'm having a blast with it!!! I feel as though I'm riding on a cloud... everything is very smooth; the gearshift, crank, brakes, 5 degree handlebars, superlight aluminum frame. I am a first time bike buyer as well and I can assure you that this bike is worth the 420 bucks!! It's your choice though....good luck, have fun, go with the Trek!!!

That TREK 7.2 will be a nice bike. I would go for that. It should be comfortable but be sure that the shop you buy it from does fittings. If you are not fit to the bike or get the wrong size that would not be good. The TREK will be durable, safe IF YOU WEAR A HELMET & fast if you train! ;)
Have fun & welcome to cycling!

I have had one Diamond Back, sold it long ago, I have 3 treks now and think they are the best bikes.
They are not great because Lance rides them, Lance rides them because they are a great bike.
