NYC is now where near as dangerous as it was 20 years ago during the 1980s crack epidemic. Yet there are dangerous neighborhoods where one who is not from there should be caught there once the sun goes down. I think the 75th police precinct in Bed Stuy Brooklyn and the 45th in the Bronx are the two busiest.

Harlem's safety has been improving over the years. In fact, some areas are becoming quite expensive. It's not the safest place in the world, no, but it's not the most dangerous either. I feel very safe on 125th street, the main thoroughfare in Harlem, where the shops, movie theater, and famous Apollo theater are.
And Harlem is pretty big in terms of NYC neighborhoods--some areas (like parts of East Harlem) are more dangerous than others.
