Unless the gun is total crap, and I have had a couple, I can place 10 rounds, free hand, into a one inch group at 100 yards with almost anything, including my high stardard military 105 model 22 cal pistol, thats free hand. What makes a so called tack driver? I haven't been shooting for about 40 years now and after a couple of months of being back in it, I just don't understand why accuracy hasn't improved over the years.

I have read about the Savage model 12 f class 6.5 target rifle. Is it really better than a good old 45-70 with consistant loads? I remember shooting about 10" groups at 1000 yards with the 45-70. Whats the going accuracy of one of the more modern guns?

I will know more after I get back into competition, just update me on whats what nowdays.

Old retired, master. Only problem is "where the f is the target"?

I dont think you will find much change...The biggest change will be dependability. which has improved in the last 20 years, it was a common thing to have pistols worked on just to get the action to feed most brands of ammo with any reliability. Bullet construction has take some big steps, with more uniform and reliable expansion.

As to the gun itself, I dont look for any major improvements until we move into High energy weapons, IE rail guns, lasers etc. there are just to many variables in weather conditions to due much better than 5-10 inches at 1000 yards.

That savage looks interesting, I read a article in shooting times about the 308 model, for a gun boasting that kind of accuracy from the factory for 1000 dollars is impressive.

That is amazong accuracy. With just about any rifle, except an air rifle, the barrel will heat up and warp so slightle if there is more than one shot per 20 min. Brand new rifles, just about any kind, are test shot at the factory. The rifles are placed in a semi ridgid bench and have a 3 or 4 shot group. Most come up with about a 3" group. Yet you can do this, freehand no less, and get a 1" group. The only way that I would believe you is if your group is a singel shot.

Did you group even hit the traget?

I have been shooting high power for several years and to shoot a 10'' group at 1000 yards with a 45/70 .... ha ha ha... wake up. Now with a 300 or 308 yeah, but anyways its not always the rifle, it has alot to do with the ammo used too. You could use cheap ammo and get poor results as apposed to well made handloads or some decent matchgrade ammo. I would strongly recommend Black Hills match grade ammo if you go that route.

You've been choosing well and mighty lucky, besides. Most firearms aren't capable of that kind of group, but the percentage that are has gone up considerably over the years.
The 6.5/284 seems to be the latest darling of the thousand-yard crowd not because it's more capable of accuracy than the 45-70 but because it doesn't kick the bejeezus out of you over an afternoon's shooting. If you've been around that long, your shoulder the day or two after shooting will appreciate the lighter caliber.

Well as far as out of the box accuracy it would be a Remington Model 700 Bolt Action. I have a 30/06 caliber that will shoot less than one inch groups at 100 yards

do you give lessons? I have been building and buying custom rifles in wildcat calibers, reloading myself and shooting of a bench. I have been investing a lot of money into custom made over the years. Now i find out i could just shoot a rimfire pistol and get the kind of accuracy i have trying to obtain for years. I wish i would have known this earlier. I could have bagged a lot more coyotes that were hanging up at 400 yards if i would have folded up my bipod on my rifle and grabbed my pistol out of my leg holster.

No, it doesn't. Some people tack the words at the end of their "question" when you know darn well that they meant to be offensive. Example: "Why are Christians so dumb? No offense." Yeah, right....
