I have some kendas that have lasted for years, only problem is, they have never attempted to grip any surface, ever, during this time...

I also have some maxxis Swamp thing super tacky 2.5's that only lasted a normal amount of time for an mtb tyre - 10 months'ish. They performed well throughout this time.

Go for maxxis out of the two (their widths are very narrow though); I have however found hutchinson and continental to be very good for your type of riding - and they aren't so commercially overpriced as maxxis tyres. Try panaracer also. -> don't be lead by the hype of current mtb advertising, just because maxxis and nokian have huge advertising campaigns out at the moment doesn't mean they are good.

(I would reccommend Continental: Gravity or Diesel [different widths - same tyre], not sure which Hutchinsons to reccommend, I have'nt had a pair for a while, they should all be good though)

Depending on the tire model and compound. Sometimes a more expensive tire does not mean more durable. Kenda has several compounds. Stick-e is a compound that is very grippy, has lot's of traction, but usually won't last long, so it's good for a front tire, but not that good as a rear tire. Unless you're racing and prefer short time duration with better performance. DTC is dual thread compound, which means it uses a compound on the middle threads that is stronger than stick-e, and uses stick-e on the outside.

I don't know about Maxxis.

Personally, I have some Kenda Nevegals on my bike and love them. I have a stick-e on the front and DTC on the rear. Maxxis also has some great tires.

And about affordable, it depends on the model and compound, you would need to search on shops to see how much they run.

both are reliable, but I would go for the Maxxis over the Kenda
but also check out the Specialized line
