On a Friday or Saturday night let him stay up until 9:00, then 10:00, then 11:00, then 12:00. Every time you see him nodding off, wake him up and tell him he might miss something. Keep this up until he's shot. That'll cure him. It'll only take one lo-o-o-ng evening.
PS - Don't try this on an evening when he/she is to go to school the next day as the teachers tend to frown on children falling asleep during class.

You can try to establish some activity for him that he can only do in his room before bedtime. Kids should have a period of wind-down time, at least an hour before their bedtime. It may be difficult at first, but if you're consistent he should adapt. If you find a relaxing activity that he enjoys and make it a rule that he must do that activity in his room, it will be easier to get him into bed. It is a great opportunity to spend some time with him, if you are able to. Set the tivo, tell him you'll read one book of his choosing, then he has to get in his bed and he can look at a comic book or something.
The most important thing is to set boundaries and be consistent. If you cave in, he won't respect the rules.

You do that at age 3 not 8, someone has been a bit too lenient. Now your work is twice as hard, be very firm as the child already understands what you want. The only problem is the child also understand who really is in charge...the child.

How's about this? Go with him instead of telling him to go. Develop a bedtime routine that works for him (and you). Go with him, have him read to you something he enjoys. Ask him what was one thing he really liked about his day; and listen to his response. Tell him how special he is, that you'll be right outside if he needs you, and that you trust him to go to sleep. Remind him again about how special he is to you, touch his hand or hug him and repeat it again telling him you love him. Then do it every night. It'll become something he'll look forward to!

get him tired during the day buy taking him to the park and playing with him and make him do homework a little before bedtime and he would probably be nice enough to do it becuase if you hit him he would probably be screaming all night and you don't want that

Well first of all you tell him to.
If you lack this simple authority over your child you have bigger problems to work on.
Give him choices:
1. you go to bed now and read quietly
2. you don't go to your bedroom and when you wake up in the morning all of your fun things will be gone until you learn to listen

Physically, an 8 year old should be small enough that you can just pick him up and take him to his room without hurting him. And then once he is in there either lock the door or sit outside his door so he can't leave.

Pick him up and take him yourself. I don't know how you discipline your child but that's the worse i ever had to do with my girls. They would refuse to go and i would take them and tell them that they better not get out until the sun comes back up. I never had to do more than that.

Dont so much bribe him but tell him that he'll get rewarded if he does. Then everytime he does reward him in some way. Whatever you do dont yell at him, cause then he'll just act stubborn... or cry and that's never fun
