A friend on mine is getting married. She and her fiance are having a wedding shower. Men and women are attending, as well as both sides of the family. What is the difference between wedding shower and the actually wedding gift? Are they basically the same types of gifts (i.e., housewares, etc.)? I do not want to be inappropriate in my gift giving.

For showers, the best gift to give is something off of the registry. For the actual wedding, I always believe cash is the most appropriate. If you follow those guidelines, then you won't be giving anything inappropriate.

Any wedding showers or engagement parties i've been to have had wedding type gifts given (housewares, gift cards, etc). Sometimes the bride and groom will include their registry information with the shower invitation if they have registered somewhere. If you are unsure you could go to a department store that has wedding registries and ask the person in charge of registries what they think is an appropriate gift for a shower.

I think it's different for every wedding - you should ask the person who is throwing the shower. Sometimes showers have a theme, and the gifts are according to that theme. And sometimes the guests just purchase gifts off the couple's registry. In any case, you do not need to buy a gift for both the shower or the wedding.

It sometimes depends on if there is a theme to the shower. My cousin had a kitchen theme for her shower, but all of the other showers I've been too, gifts are usually given off of the registry for both the shower and the wedding

To make it easy give a regular gift at the shower and a monetary gift at the wedding.

Shower gifts are more modest - towels, sheets, kitcheney stuff. Wedding gift is a little more substantial - appliances, etc.

Most couples are registered at stores of their choice...so you cannot go wrong with a gift this way
