B. xylem transports water

Life on land requires:
-- waxy cuticle over parts of plants that are exposed to air; prevents excess water loss through evaporation
-- some way to reproduce that doesn't require water for sperms to swim to the eggs (flowers with pollen, cones, ...)
-- vascular tissue to transport water to various parts of the plant from the roots
-- vascular tissue to help support the plant and hold it upright since it is not surrounded by water for support
