I'm getting a brown Portuguese Water Dog next weekend. I'd like to give him a Portuguese name. Not English sounding but not too exotic either. Considering Bras, Americo (Rico), Nicolau (Nico) and Jojo. Open to other suggestions.

Any name you can come up with.

Try going to Google and searching for Portugese names.
Check a map of Portugal, and see about an exotic little village, then modify the name.

Scruffy is not such a stupid name. We have a portugese water dog, she is 9 years old and the family and everyone who meets her loves her. We called her scruffy because if you dont groom her every day she resembles her name and even when we do groom her she takes great pleasure in running into the countryside and rolling so she always looks scruffy
