You can provide donations and volunteer with your local non-profit agencies that serve your local community. Start by checking with your local volunteer center. They can help you find various non-profit agencies that match your interests in which you can volunteer or help.
Here are some links to help you get started:

I help my volunteer center by serving on the board of directors, fundraising, volunteering and leading various projects at libraries, museums, parks, shelters, and the food bank. Many volunteer centers have affiliations with international organizations as well, so you can provide the widest range of support by connecting with your volunteer center.
Good luck!

Are you able to adopt?? If so, then that could be your way of helping some helpless human out. Another thought would be, go visit out old people who are lonely. I'm guessing that you will have to join some community group who does this sort of charity. Better yet, since you're so zealous of helping others, why not be a politician. Prove to the world the true meaning of a leader. I'm sure you'd make a great one.

School PTA, if you don't have children you can do it for family or friends. We really need more adults helping out at the schools. If that doesn't sound like you, then stop and think about what does. Do you enjoy working with the elderly, or pets, perhaps you enjoying being outside. Then you can use the internet or even the phone book to find someone who would love to have you help them. The Red Cross is a really good place to go.

There are so many things you can do. People have already posted great ideas here too.
You state you want to get involved with your community so what about becoming a mentor? like Big Brother Big Sister.
You mentioned God, do you go to church? are you involved with your church? Can you plan events in your church? trips? You can also ask in your church, to the spiritual leader there, and they can guide you and give you some leads. There are shelters, food pantries and homes etc.
If it is about giving money out, there are places you can research online that are always seeking donations and you can go that route.
I think that you don't have to wait to enroll into something in order to think about yourself as involved you can help out those around you with basic things as being their for them. There is alot of need.

The greatest thing you might do is to listen to the people who need to be heard. People who are old, sick, abused, trapped in addictions, imprisoned, depressed, illiterate, or whatever always need an understanding ear. The world is full of hurting people and just being a good listener can help you become a good doer.

THere is a wonderful book by Ram Dass called "How Can I Help" In it are many ideas that span a broad cultural and religeoues base. He was a reknowned psychologist who then turned to philosophy. The suggestions are both practical and world encompassing.

Join an organisation which does all these things, such as Rotary (or Rotaract if you are under 30), Lions (or Leos) etc.... They undertake projects both locally and internationally, so there are a lot of different things you can choose to participate in or help organise.

Donate food to food banks.
Organize a street cleanup - get everyone to take a plastic bag and go around your area picking up trash;
Volunteer to be a Big Sister;
Help at soup kitchens;
Phone your local volunteer bureau and ask for suggestions.
Good for you that you want to help those less fortunate than you.

First thing. dont try to "SAVE THE WORLD".
second Dont try to convert everyone to your faith, its a massive turn off.
Third. Volunteer. Try a few thhings until you find something you like.
Example might be at a homleess shelter, or a child care centre.
Even being pleasant to other people, can be of help.
good luck
