My 1 year old throws himself on the floor and against the walls, then walks up to me saying Mommy, Mommy as though he didn't just do it to himself. Then when I go to pick him up, he throws a tantrum and beats himself against me too. HELP!! What do I do?

My youngest is going through the same kind of thing.. he flails around and headbutts. My son isn't talking (other then dada) but he's been walking from about 9mo (soooo unfair).

I remember my oldest throwing some fits like this but not as many and not as long. I think my youngest son's frustration is that 1. he's home all day- we have an in-home nanny
2. he can't communicate his feelings.
3. he's sleepy and fighting naps.

What I do to calm it is some cuddle time (my son is 12mo and still uses a bottle- I know I should quit now but we have a flight in 2 weeks and he will need the sucking to help his ears), make sure he is fed, make sure he is changed and offer him a new toy or a new room to play in.

I agree he's probably doing it for the attention... So I'd ask yourself if you've been ignoring him too much and perhaps spend more time with him *before* he shows this behavior, rather than *after* this behavior. 1yos need a fair amount of attention, but you wouldn't want to teach your child that he should hurt himself to get it. Or perhaps it's just a phase where he's learning about hurt and physical limitations. You don't know that walking into a wall hurts until you've tried it, and tried it a few times to make sure it consistently does.

You need to change your behavior towards him when this happens. He is getting something out of this and that is your reactions to him. Check him out to make sure he's not hurt, but do not make eye contact, don't look at him longer than necessary and remove him from the place to another designated safe spot for a time out. This is something he is doing for attention and the less attention that you give him over incidents like that, the better.

ignore him, he is doing it to get attention. Let him have a tantrum, and ignore it. Later, when he's calm and plkaying normally, give him attention and praise for playing so nicely, never bringing up the tantrum. He will learn to seek praise through good beahvior (not an over night thing, it will take time ) and not through negative actions.

Whenhe has a fitt like that pick him up and hold him so he cant hurt himself. Most of the time when lil ones do that they r so futrated and thats the only way they can get there futrations out. After hes done with his fitt talk to him and explain why he cant do or whatever hes having the fitt for. Then explain to him what he should do when he feels that way.

Ignore it! Its attention seeking behavior! Walk away and tell him you dont want to talk to him until her stops being silly!
