Depends on your budget, and how smooth you are.

Specialized has the SX Trail, which is good if you're lightweigth rider and can be very versatile. If not, look at the Big Hit (which will be cheaper) or the Demo.

Santa Cruz has the VP Free which looks pretty good and versatile, and I have some friends that love that bike.

Cannondale has the Judge, which might be good, but I haven't heard almost anything about that. The Gemini was very good, I don't know if it's still available or not.

Titus has the Super Moto, which is also very, very good bike.

Turner has the Skyline or also the RFX.

Kona has also some good affordable ones.

Actually, DH and FR bikes geometry are different. A DH rig will have a longer wheelbase and probably lower BB than a FR rig, which will need a shorter wheelbase to be more easily maneouvered on the air.

I really like the Cannondale product line when it comes to downhill and freeride stuff. The Gemini series was very popular when I worked with them in the shop.

iron horse look to be good, you CANNOT go wrong with kona or cannondale either.

specialized bikes are good also, but from my experience I would avoid buying bikes which don't have a seat tube going all the way down to the bb (interrupted seat tube), they simply don't have enough height adjustment for the broad range of riding you'll be doing (up hill [saddle up high], down hill [quite low], drops [very low], jumps [all the way low]) and are just evidence of a lazy design department as far as I'm concerned. - I sold my Norco because of this problem!

In the '60s we did it without DH and without MTB. Sure we broke some frames.
