The only thing I had much success with is a product called Kick-N-Bass. They make a few different scents for bass, walleye, trout, catfish but the crawfish scent works best for crappie. This stuff is super concentrated and stays where you put it, so you don't want to get it on your mustache hairs unless you really like that smell.

If you are talking about the type of cover which attracts crappie then the answer is brushpiles near baitfish.

Well I have tried many things the best I have found for gamefish is beleive it or not ...Baitmate Catfish attractant. it has a sweet fish smell and works GREAT for bass.

I had the oppurtunity to talk to Tom Mann once at an outdoor show Tom was a world known fisherman and lure maker. I asked him the same question you are asking . He said that in all his companys experiments that best fish attractant was cod liver oil. it can be bought in a drug store.

I use bait mate crappie, it is the best on live minnows or jigs.

I've found the best fish attractant to be a live worm wiggling in total agony on the hook.

In clearer waters, go for duller colors such as yellows, greens, browns and greys. In murkier water, and deeper water, use reds and reflectants. A small chunk of earthworm or a grub never hurts.
