They are posturing for a gaining power after we leave. Plain and simple they forsee the American Media and Left minded political leaders are allies to get us to leave before the violence ends; and they need to be militarily strong and powerful to take over as we do pull out. If they thought we had what it takes to wait them out they would stand down - but they don't. They do not want a government in place that is favorable to the west; they want one favorable to Iran who is supporting them.

The insurgents are Sunni, the majority is Shiite.
If we leave the Shiites will take over and the foriegn fighters will leave.
