The first Christians had no doubts about how to determine which was the true Church and which doctrines the true teachings of Christ. The test was simple: Just trace the apostolic succession of the claimants.
Apostolic succession is the line of bishops stretching back to the apostles. All over the world, all Catholic bishops are part of a lineage that goes back to the time of the apostles, something that is impossible in Protestant denominations (most of which do not even claim to have bishops).
The role of apostolic succession in preserving true doctrine is illustrated in the Bible. To make sure that the apostles’ teachings would be passed down after the deaths of the apostles, Paul told Timothy, "[W]hat you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also" (2 Tim. 2:2). In this passage he refers to the first three generations of apostolic succession—his own generation, Timothy’s generation, and the generation Timothy will teach.
The Church Fathers, who were links in that chain of succession, regularly appealed to apostolic succession as a test for whether Catholics or heretics had correct doctrine. This was necessary because heretics simply put their own interpretations, even bizarre ones, on Scripture. Clearly, something other than Scripture had to be used as an ultimate test of doctrine in these cases.
Thus the early Church historian J. N. D. Kelly, a Protestant, writes, "[W]here in practice was [the] apostolic testimony or tradition to be found? . . . The most obvious answer was that the apostles had committed it orally to the Church, where it had been handed down from generation to generation. . . . Unlike the alleged secret tradition of the Gnostics, it was entirely public and open, having been entrusted by the apostles to their successors, and by these in turn to those who followed them, and was visible in the Church for all who cared to look for it" (Early Christian Doctrines, 37).
For the early Fathers, "the identity of the oral tradition with the original revelation is guaranteed by the unbroken succession of bishops in the great sees going back lineally to the apostles. . . . [A]n additional safeguard is supplied by the Holy Spirit, for the message committed was to the Church, and the Church is the home of the Spirit. Indeed, the Church’s bishops are . . . Spirit-endowed men who have been vouchsafed ‘an infallible charism of truth’" (ibid.).
Thus on the basis of experience the Fathers could be "profoundly convinced of the futility of arguing with heretics merely on the basis of Scripture. The skill and success with which they twisted its plain meaning made it impossible to reach any decisive conclusion in that field" (ibid., 41).
Pope Clement I
"Through countryside and city [the apostles] preached, and they appointed their earliest converts, testing them by the Spirit, to be the bishops and deacons of future believers. Nor was this a novelty, for bishops and deacons had been written about a long time earlier. . . . Our apostles knew through our Lord Jesus Christ that there would be strife for the office of bishop. For this reason, therefore, having received perfect foreknowledge, they appointed those who have already been mentioned and afterwards added the further provision that, if they should die, other approved men should succeed to their ministry" (Letter to the Corinthians 42:4–5, 44:1–3 [A.D. 80]).

You choose which religion works for you sometimes people try a few before they are happy, just because someone else has a certain religion does not mean it may be for you ,think about what values you would like to adopt and then incorporate it into something that suits you, some have a lot of restrictions, others are more relaxed, do some reasearch first.

You're right. You have to find the one that has answers to all your questions, and reasonable ones. You have to find the loving organization that you will feel part of, and the one that is different from all the others that does not modify the Bible to it's own conveniences. A lot of religions edit the Bible, but you have to find the name of God. You have to search for the people who are really reading the Bible and following it's commands. I think there is where you'll find the true and only religion.
" One body there is, and one spirit, even as YOU were called in the one hope to which YOU were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all [persons], who is over all and through all and in all."
-Ephesians 4: 4-6

Religions are real. They are all real. Which one is correct? That might be the better question. Each one claims to be correct. So, how does one decide which one is correct? Well, I'm a Christian, so I could tell you that to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and He came to earth as a man to die as payment for our sins so that if we accept Him into our hearts, we can live eternally with Him in Heaven when we die. While I believe that, only YOU can decide if that is right. How will you know? You won't believe any way of believing is right or wrong until you search for answers yourself. You could check out each religion and see which one makes sense. While you are doing this, I would encourage you to read the Bible. Pick up a Revised American Standard version or a New International Version or even a Living Bible. These Bibles are written in plain English, versus the old King James version which is harder to understand. Start from beginning to end. When you get to the parts where you see God in a surprising way, pray to Him for understanding. Read the New Testament. Read it again. Pray before and/or after you read and ask God to reveal to you what He wants you to know. Only you can decide for yourself which is right. God gives you that free choice.
Because all religions can't be right, for if they were, then they would be contradicting one another, then you have to decide which one IS right. If you believe in God, any God, then pray to Him as you search for answers. He will prompt your heart. Be sincere as you pray - don't mock Him. Ask him sincerely to help you know what the truth is. He will show you if you sincerely ask and if you are patient. He isn't always obvious. Sometimes you have to be patient. God knows what you need and will often allow you to go through stuff or wait forever in order to make a greater impact at the time when you are most ready to hear or receive the truth. I will be praying for you and my prayer will be that you will know which way is right.
God bless you!!

. Jesus started one true Christian religion. So today there must be just one body, or group, of true worshipers of Jehovah God. (John 4:23, 24; Ephesians 4:4, 5) The Bible teaches that only a few people are on the narrow road to life.—Matthew 7:13, 14.
2. The Bible foretold that after the death of the apostles, wrong teachings and unchristian practices would slowly come into the Christian congregation. Men would draw away believers to follow them instead of Christ. (Matthew 7:15, 21-23; Acts 20:29, 30) That is why we see so many different religions that claim to be Christian. How can we identify true Christians?
3. The most outstanding mark of true Christians is that they have real love among themselves. (John 13:34, 35) They are not taught to think that they are better than people of other races or skin color. Neither are they taught to hate people from other countries. (Acts 10:34, 35) So they do not share in wars. True Christians treat one another as brothers and sisters.—1 John 4:20, 21.
4. Another mark of true religion is that its members have a deep respect for the Bible. They accept it as the Word of God and believe what it says. (John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17) They treat God's Word as being more important than human ideas or customs. (Matthew 15:1-3, 7-9) They try to live by the Bible in their everyday life. So they do not preach one thing and then practice another.—Titus 1:15, 16.
The true religion must also honor God's name. (Matthew 6:9) Jesus made God's name, Jehovah, known to others. True Christians must do the same. (John 17:6, 26; Romans 10:13, 14) Who are the people in your community that tell others about God's name?
6. True Christians must preach about God's Kingdom. Jesus did so. He always talked about the Kingdom. (Luke 8:1) He commanded his disciples to preach this same message in all the earth. (Matthew 24:14; 28:19, 20) True Christians believe that only God's Kingdom will bring true peace and security to this earth.—Psalm 146:3-5.
7. Jesus' disciples must be no part of this wicked world. (John 17:16) They do not get involved in the world's political affairs and social controversies. They avoid the harmful conduct, practices, and attitudes that are common in the world. (James 1:27; 4:4) Can you identify a religious group in your community that has these marks of true Christianity?

God is real. He is the only God. He created this Earth. We should not be caught up in religion. It is all about the close relationship with Him! There has to be a balance of emphasis on both the Bible and on the Holy Spirit. Both are so real and so important.

Of course they are all real. To the people who use them to worship God. God can be found at the end of many paths, that's the beauty of it. The idea that it has to be 'one way or the highway' is not merely old fashioned, it is prejudicial. Each of us finds a way of worshipping that works for us. As long as the end result is a good life, well lead, and a meaningful, loving relationship or feeling toward God, you've arrived! Peace.

your right there are way to many religions and not knowing which one is right...They all have there good points and they all have there bad points...The question is how you feel and how you believe..then you go and seek the church on how you feel and believe, one that will make you comfortable, one that will teach the truth from the Bible and not from man...Or you can just start a Bible study in your own home and do it that way, you know you will be learning, teaching out of the Bible and it will be the truth, (as long as you let God's Spirit lead the studies) don't try to have them on your own it don't always work that way.. seek God first and see where He leads you..Blessings to you..

Religion is what you make of it, don't let someone else shape it for you. find your own beliefs first, then the religion that matches you, but never accept something that forces it's beliefs on you. A religion that fits you and what your own beliefs are is the only REAL one to you.

why can't they all be true? I believe that we all believe in and worship the Divine. Some just have differents ways of worshiping than others. With my beliefs all paths lead back to the Divine there fore are all true. Everybody enterprits truth differently (even in the same religioin - one person in a Lutheran church may interpret truth one way yet somebody else in that church may interpret it completely differently). There are different truths in religion interpreted different ways but that doesn't make the interpretations false.
