I suspect that it's a bit of both, many cultures "kiss", but it is not always a romantic gesture. Kissing as we consider it is mostly a learned act. A wonderful one, but learned.
Think back to your first kiss. Did you worry or fret over it, or did it just happen?

Well kissing is learned. I read some book about a white guy in Africa who was living among the natives. He had to teach the girls to kiss.
I think the instinctual part is the desire for closeness and sex. Also a dog liks your face because its looking for food. So maybe its instinctual but i would go with learned if it was a quiz or something.

learned, but at the same time it is easy to understand how it happened. If two people are having sex their faces are right up against each other (unless they are in some other more interesting position), so I could see how it got started. It is better than just looking at each other's pores.
Those that say it is instinctual are completely mistaken, there are certain cultures that do not ever kiss in a romantic way.

Have you ever fed a baby. If you brush the baby's cheek, you baby will more in that direction. It is instinctual.
Now watch too lovers. They kiss starting at the cheek.

Practice makes perfect...my first kiss was ridiculas, I was nervous and bumbling...once I got over that the feelings take over.
Good kissing I think comes from a couple with an intuitive connection to "their" desires.
