Yes, sherry is wine.
It's a fortified wine like port and madeira in that it's fermented like any other wine and then has unaged brandy or neutral spirit added to stop the fermentation process, raise the alcohol content, and help preserve it.

Like wine, there are various levels of quality of sherry...from dirt cheap, to supremely expensive that is sipped on very special occasions.

It is what is known as a 'fortified wine'. Spirits - brandy - are added to the pure wine, to make it stronger. Decent sherry is for drinking, rough sherry for cooking.

It can be qualified as a type of wine. Usually, they call it Sherry brandy, perhaps because of the level of the degree it has. Most people, especially in UK like to drink a little after big meals, think these help with digestion. I do drink them sometimes, as I feel the sweetness helps me feel a little better after having big dinner.
Sherry with cigar after dinner with a good book by and comfortable chair is the best pre bed time for me.

It's a fortified wine. Sherry is added to it during the aging process and it's a whole lot sweeter.
