What size should photos be if your making a portfolio?

I want to make a portfolio displaying some of my work but I'm not sure what size I should print them.

8X10 or 11X14 are generally preferred.

My choice would be 8x10. Whatever size you choose, make sure your photos are a consistent high quality. Choose a portfolio that is both easy to carry and show the photographs. There's nothing worse than having a photographer fumble around as photographs tumble to the floor. I don't know the purpose of your portfolio, but I would suggest putting together a simple flyer that includes your name and contact information as well as small versions of the photos in your portfolio. Good luck.

Photography and portfolios are personal matters and everyone has different choices.

Be yourself and do whatever feels good.

If you are mailing the portfolio, then you would want to make it easy to mail .

If not mailing it make it any size you like.

Make a digital portfolio, that's even better.

How you make it and how large you make it only depends on whom you are trying to impress.

If you are doing it for you, then do what you like.

Get Photographers' Market 2007 ; that's a great book for selling photographs.
IF you have a low budget , do a digital photo portfolio at photobucket.com , or at some other site. These are usually free.

And or do a 5 x 7 portfolio.

Your talent will shine through no matter what the size of the photos.

I am NOT in the art world, but I would say to make the pictures "the right size" for each picture. 8x10 is pretty much a standard photo size, but 5x7 is closer to a full-frame format. 8x12 would be the full-frame for a 35 mm negative or most digital SLR sensors. I used to get most of my prints made to 8x12 and then, if I wanted to cut them down any, the exact cropping was up to me.

Unless there is some specification, I'd say to go ahead and make the print size suitable for the art you are displaying.

Of course, you will mount them with the customary 2" border.

Hello. Have you given thought as to HOW MANY you will put in the portfolio? I would give you the input given to me by my fine artist brother. He said not to have more than 20 images in your portfolio. Having them matted and then maybe with something in between each if you'll be showing them one at a time. Having it set that way they won't move on to the next image until you are ready for them to. Try to put something in for a wide audience to see, as well as have a more tailored made one for a given task. Know who you are dealing with as to what they would like and do it that way. You probably should have some business cards with your name and address for giving to prospective customers. Have your most artistically gifted friends go over the best choices with you... and ask for their input. Of course you will put some in that are your personal best. Keep pushing and good luck.

My photography teacher said that portfolios should be 8x10 or 11x14. Idealy. He had us make our portfolios 8x10 mounted with a 2 inch border on each side

I personally use 11X14's, 8X10's, and a few 5X7's.
