Sometimes things are done in phases. For example, your orthodontist may want your bottom teeth to have moved in a particular direction before starting the movement on the top.
The easiest (and best) way to find out is to simply ask. If your appt is a long time away and you really want to know, just call and ask for a callback.

It's different with each person. I had braces overall for 18 months, and braces on the bottom for I think only 9. If you're still concerned, ask your orthodontist

Ask your orthodontist, as he/she will know best. Have it explained to you. Sometimes they do the bottom first so they will know how to do the top, as the top teeth need a normal overbite. Once the bottom teeth are aligned, the top set are done to give you a correct bite, and a nice look.

They are normally done at the same time. Maybe you dont need them on the top. I have had braces twice. The first time I only had them on the bottom to straighten one tooth. The second time was done on the top and bottom to help resolve another medical condition
