I'm not so sure about historical factors since there hasn't been much mentioned..but maybe this could help.

1. Which element of art was most important to Van Gogh? (line)

2. What unique painting techniques did Van Gogh use in his paintings? (straight lines, black outlines, empty spaces, scratches, dots and dashes)

3. Describe Van Gogh’s brushstroke. ( thick, thin, long, short, wide, and narrow)

4. Why is The Starry Night one of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings? (based less on nature than the artist’s inner feelings and emotions)

5. Why did Van Gogh have such a sad life? (painted only 10 years, his only friend was his brother Theo, shot himself due to inner turmoil and mental illness)

Van gogh was directly influenced by the impressionists and the theories of color that inspired that movement, but van gogh took this further and his color became more intense and expressionistic as he progressed. His drawing style and consequently his brushstrokes also were directly influenced by the style of Japanese prints that were very popular at the time. His work shows more contrast (change) of color rather than value(lightness or darkness of color e.g Rembrandt) or pattern ( Picasso,Feninger) so that means his work is predominantly about color, not line as someone else has suggested.Van gogh sometimes mistakenly is classified as impressionist.he was post-impressionist along with cezanne ,gauguin and others.

Um, his own depression! Do you realize that before Vincent was born his parents had a son by the same name who died? His parents named him after his dead brother! As a child he had to walk by a graveyard every day on his way to school and see a headstone that read Vincent Van Gogh on it. Thats enough to make a person mentally unstable in itself. Obviously there were other issues that aided in his depression, but he was psychologically impacted from that experience as a child.

You should really check out wikipedia.org.....they have some really interesting info on him.

This sounds like a homework question, don't you have a text book?
Try looking harder next time. The wikipedia article below details van Gogh's life and should give you some ideas of what formed his unique style.

Van Gogh painted during a very brief period of about 10 years although being involved in art since age 10, lived less than 40 years and moved about constantly.

The first half of his life was spent in a time of relative peace in Europe so he could move about, but a restless time when governments were changing.

This probably reflects in the turbulance of many of his paintings, but his uncertain life and conflict between his art interests and the plans made for him may also.
