First I wanted to answer "The afterlife is a green halibut." But reading your question more closely, I think it merits a serious answer.

I, as an Agnostic, don't believe in an afterlife. But so do many religions! I think luring or scaring people with some afterlife of another, diminishes a religion.

And as I look at the central tenets of most religions and moral philosophies, they're variations on the same theme : Altruism, "So long as it harms none", Agape, "Love Thy Neighbor". And *not* : "Be nice and you will be rewarded".

I'm still disgusted how, when I was kid, they told to us that if we were "nice", we would later see little Baby Jesus, and eat porridge with silver spoons.

Red Herring? More like a bloated whale!

Interesting thought. No one really knows for sure what happens.. we all make a guess.. death itself is experiential.. why worry about it, when you can do nothing about it?
Living life meaningfully is absolutely what we should be doing :)
