take south ferry (public transportation - free) from battary park to staten island and back - you dont have to pay money to get the look of statue of liberty and manhattan looks absolutely beautiful from there.
take N or Q train Brooklyn bound when it gets dark (and then go back) - the view from the bridge is gorgeous.

Battery Park is a beautiful area to go to. It's right on the water and you can walk along the boardwalk. You also have a great view of the statue of liberty, and during 4th July the fireworks as well.You'll see tons of people in the park, enjoying the weather while walking their dogs, taking a jog, playing basketball, volleyball, or even rollerblading. During the summer you'll also see free kayaking and trapeze classes. Battery Park is right near the financial district, so you can stop by the World Financial building and the Wintergarden buildi ng where you can see the new design plans for the freedom towers. You can also see ground zero from there. Another place I would recommend is greenwich village, st. marks, and shopping around bleecker st. I hope you have a great stay in New York. You'll love it. Also check out Da Andrea, which is an italian restaurant near the village. It's a cute place that is pretty inexpensive.

Oh dear....there's sooo much to say to this one. Let's see, I'll start from downtown.
Downtown:
Visit Battery Park, The South Street Seaport and walk along the Brooklyn Bridge. Be sure to walk over to Chinatown and stop at their many bakeries for some pork or coconut buns, or eat at a restaurant. Moon Door is great and CHEAP! Have dessert in Little Italy. The village itself is an amazing place...both the east and the west side. Just walk all over it. Pay attention to the cobblestone streets - the homes are beautiful.
Midtown:
There are TONS of touristy places, so I'll not list them here. However, don't pass up the beauty of Lincoln Center and the area around it. Then head on east through Central Park and stop at Dylans candy shop (which is amazing!) or even stop off at Serendipity, which is up the block (prepare for long lines and HUGE sundaes).
And then head on uptown .... all the way up town...to the Cloisters Museum. Its absolutely breathtaking and situated overlooking the Hudson River. It will be hard to believe you are still in New York.
And as you head back downtown, stop off in Harlem and get some yummy spanish food for cheap, or stop off at 125th Street and ask for Dinosaur, a great BBQ place.
there are so many other things to do and see! but I hope you find some of these suggestions good ones. If you can get in a baseball game, do so. Any questions or help needed , just let me know!

Try to get to Bryant Park, especially on a warm weekend day. There are all types of street performers! If you have children go to the children's museum. I am not sure the exact block but it's somewhere between 72nd and 86th between Broadway and Amsterdam. They have a website. My daughter still loves to talk about crawling through the digestive system. The Nyorican Cafe. It's on the lower east side. I don't remember the exact block, but they have a web page as well. They have great salsa and poetry slams there. It's a really easy going atmosphere. Also, don't be afraid to leave Manhattan. There is June Ballon in Brooklyn (assuming you are going to be there in June), the Bronx Zoo, the dog track in Yonkers, etc. Check the NYC website. There is a list of all the streetfairs/events that need a street permit. If you get to a street fair make sure that you have the corn pancakes with cheese melted in the middle. They are soooo good.

1. step into the lobby of an architectural landmark and study its features;
2. look up the top of skyscrapers and marvel at the riot of mosaics, carvings and ornaments;
3. find a bench or ledge on which to perch and take time just to watch the crowd passing by
walk....walk....walk
