Because, firstly, Jesus warned us that those who would say that the Messiah has returned would be lying.

Mat 24:26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

Secondly, Jesus said that his coming would be so spectacular that all would know that he has returned. He said that he would come back with the brilliance of a lightning strike:

Mat 24:27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

If he doesn't come back? I can't really answer that one. Perhaps someone else can think of an answer to that.

Book 37, Number 4310: (Abu Dawud)

Narrated AbuHurayrah:

The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: There is no prophet between me and him, that is, Jesus (peace_be_upon_him). He will descent (to the earth). When you see him, recognise him: a man of medium height, reddish fair, wearing two light yellow garments, looking as if drops were falling down from his head though it will not be wet. He will fight the people for the cause of Islam. He will break the cross, kill swine, and abolish jizyah. Allah will perish all religions except Islam. He will destroy the Antichrist and will live on the earth for forty years and then he will die. The Muslims will pray over him.

Jesus said He will return to earth in the clouds.

"While they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." Acts 1:9-11.

The Scriptures promise that Jesus will return to this earth in the same manner that He left at His ascension--in a visible, literal, bodily, personal manner. Matthew 24:30 says, "They shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory." He will come in the clouds literally, as a personal being with a body of flesh and bones (Luke 24:36-43, 50, 51), and His coming will be visible. Scripture is clear on these facts.

read your Bible. it is certain that He will come. just take the time to read the book of Matthew and chapter 24. and Luke 21:7 says that he will come in a cloud with great glory. He will come but nobody knows the day nor the hour (matthew24:44)
Also read 1 Thess 5:1-4. i hope it helps and that it may increase your faith in the Lord.

I will know Him, my Savior and Lord, by the nail prints in his hands and by His voice telling me, "well done good and faithful servant."

Oh... He's coming back... you can literally bet your life on that. He promised to come the first time and kept that promise... what makes you think He won't keep the promise to come again?

Believers know what to look for because we are told in the Bible. If He doesn't return during my living years, I'm confident that He'll include me during the rapture.

Repent for you sins for the Kingdom of Heaven is near! All that is written is being fulfilled. People who will recognize Jesus will be glad they kept His word.
