It all depends on what you are cooking. Instead of slow cooking, you could even use a pressure cooker to cook very rapidly. OR... you could just use regular pots and cook the usual way.
Slow cookers are VERY cheap (15 dollar'ish) at any of the discount stores such as Walmart. If you need one, and you want the relative safety of it, I would suggest you don't mess around and purchase one.
You could perhaps pick one up at second hand stores for few dollars. Just about everybody had one in the past (and no longer use it), so they pop up fairly frequently and cheaply.

If you have a pressure cooker, use that. If not use a large pot with a close fitting lid and set the heat so that the liquid just barely bubbles. Watch it closely until you get the hang of it and add liquid as needed. Don't let it go dry as the meal with toughen as it dries out and burn.

A dutch oven on the stove top or in the oven...depends on what you're making as to how long it would take. It will be faster this way, though, plus you can't leave the house with the oven or stove on...(not that you should REALLY leave the house with a slow cooker running...)

Put a tight lid on the pot and cook on an electric hot plate at the lowest setting. Worked for me.
