It can change the imune system, but how bad? What can be the damage? I really doubt that it turns you into something worse, like a mutant. lol, which sounds silly, but what exactly happens?

How you're affectsed depends on the strength of the radiation given off and the time for which you're exposed to the radiation.

Mild radiation sickness:
headache and increased risk of infection due to disruption of immunity cells. Temporary male sterility is possible

Light radiation poisoning:
10% fatality after 30 days. Typical symptoms include mild to moderate nausea with occasional vomiting,. This is followed by a 10 to 14 day gap, after which light symptoms like general illness and fatigue appear. The immune system is depressed, with increased risk of infection. Temporary male sterility is common. abortion or stillbirth will occur in pregnant women

Severe radiation poisoning:
35% fatality after 30 days. Nausea/Vomiting experienced.Symptoms onset at 1 to 6 hours after irradiation and last for 1 to 2 days. 7 to 14 day gap, after which the following symptoms appear: loss of hair all over the body fatigue and general illness. There is a massive loss of white blood cells, greatly increasing the risk of infection. Permanent female sterility is possible.

Very Severe radiation poisoning:
50% fatality after 30 days. Other symptoms are similar to the severe, with uncontrollable bleeding in the mouth, under the skin and in the kidneys after the gap.

Acute radiation poisoning:
near 100% fatality after 14 days Survival depends on intense medical care. Bone marrow is nearly or completely destroyed, so a bone marrow transplant is required. Gastric and intestinal tissue are severely damaged. Symptoms start 15 to 30 minutes after irradiation and last for up to 2 days. Subsequently, there is a 5 to 10 day gap, after which the person dies of infection or internal bleeding. Recovery would take several years and probably would never be complete.

Very Acute radiation poisoning:
100% fatality after 7 day. An exposure this high leads to symptoms after 5 to 30 minutes. After powerful fatigue and immediate nausea there is a period of several days of comparative well-being, called the latent (or "walking ghost") phase. After that, cell death in the gastric and intestinal tissue, causing massive diarrhoea, intestinal bleeding and loss of water, leads to water-electrolyte imbalance. Death sets in with delirium and coma due to breakdown of circulation. Death is currently inevitable; the only treatment that can be offered is pain therapy.

And thats what happens. If inhaled, the symptoms would probably be classified as severe.

easily there is little or no you are able to do with the waste from reactors (spent gas because that's popular) except keep it till that's now no longer radioactive and that is a lengthy lengthy time period. notwithstanding, you are able to minimise its quantity so the region is not any larger than it must be and then that's keep in a secure position that you'll assure will proceed to be intact for most 1000's of years, the position there aren't any seismic activities and no leakage of floor water in or out. it extremely is the idea come decrease back in 10,000 years to verify if it has worked.

It all depends on what kind of nuclear waste. Is it high or low level, Low level really nothing, this would be like x-ray waste. High level would be reactor waste and yes a long enough exposure would kill you from radiation exposure. If you ingest it some types can pass harmlessly through your system and be passed as bodily waste.

If you touch it or inhale it you die. Period. I don't know EXACTLY what happens to you, but I know that being that close to it is really bad.

You will get radiation sickness and die, if the dose you came into contact is high enough.
