As you well know, there is much controversy over celebrating Christmas and Easter because it has "pagan roots".

I understand the bible states: (2 Corinthians 6:14-16.) "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness?..."

but what is wrong with celebrating Christmas and Easter along with other holidays? Maybe it DOES have "pagan" roots, maybe it doesn't. The important thing is that we Christians celebrate the birth and ressurection of our Savior. And that being, Christians don't focus on the DATE, but the OCCASION.

So why not celebrate Christmas and Easter?

Feel free to express your opinions!
Thanks :)

God bless!

I am a Christian!

After examining the Bible, I find no biblical authority to observe Christmas and Easter. However, I do find accounts of Jesus' birth and Jesus' resurrection, but I do not find any authority to observe his birth in the month of December or his resurrection in the month of April.

Instead, notice the following verse:

Acts 20:7

7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.

The breaking of bread in the previous passage symbolizes communion. Obviously, communion is authorized for the first day of the week. Now, what does the communion do? It is a memorial for Christ! Therefore, we remember Christ during the memorial or communion.

We must only do what Christ has authorized us to do in His Word. Since there is no authority to celebrate Easter or any other special time or day in a religious way then it cannot be done by faith (Romans 14:23).

We are not just judged by our works, but also by what is in our heart.....so sayeth the Word of God.

If we "celebrate" the resurrection of Christ without thought to the derivation of the holiday of Easter, then God will see what is in our heart concerning the matter. I have come to this conclusion, because regardless of when Jesus birthday actually was (and I will not have the 100% answer to this in my lifetime on this planet, because I was not there), I want to celebrate that He was born. Regardless of the day that he was crucified, I want to celebrate His resurrection, because His gift was the greatest gift that has ever been given.

That is what is in my heart regarding Easter and Christmas. I have never even taken the time or given effort into looking for the pagan derivations.....I don't want to know the technical reasons why I should not celebrate Christ's birth and resurrection......my heart is better off this way.

I am a christian. I do celebrate Christmas and Easter as special days in my life.

They are times to be with family, to have extra time off of work, to invite friends over for a holiday meal, to share gifts, etc.

It is, however, not a special time of religious significance. It is not a day any more special than other days for worship. (Easter is on Sunday, but that Sunday is not set above other Sundays. They are all special.)

As Todd mentioned, we are given an occation when we are to remember Christ. This occurs "on the first day of the week". (Acts 20:7) It is the Lord's Supper, or communion.

To see how we are to worship (show honor to) God, we need to look into His Word, the Bible. We should be satisfied to worship God in the way His word instructs (authorizes).

Do you think God cares how we worship him? What does the Bible say?

"God is a spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24)

Our worship must be spiritual but it must also be according to truth.

Cain and Abel were both offering sacrifices to God, a form of worship in the Old Testament. Abel's was by faith, Cain's was not. (Genesis 3, Hebrews 11:4)

Without faith it is imposible to please God (Heb. 11:6). Since faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17), and Abel worshiped by faith, it can be concluded that God must have told them what He wanted. They were both worshiping, but Abel worshiped according to truth (God's word). Cain did not and his worship was rejected.

Nadab and Abihu were both worshiping, but they were using a fire that God had not authorized. Even though they were worshiping, it was not pleasing to God and he punished them with their life. (Lev. 10:1-2)

Jesus said of some, “In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men”. They were worshiping, but it was “vain”, or useless, because they were worshiping according to the commandments of men. It mattered how they were worshiping.

Jesus said he has “all authority” and the apostles were to teach the things he had commanded them (Matt 28:18-20).

If we follow the authority (instructions) of men in our worship, then does Christ have all authority in our lives? Most is not the same as all.

Who has the authority in your religion?

Paul wrote that his “hearts desire and prayer” was for some to be saved. Those he was speaking of had “a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.” They were “ignorant of God’s righteousness” and were “seeking to establish their own righteousness”. They were not worshiping according to truth.

Yes, according to the Bible, it does matter how we worship!

We should be satisfied to worship God in the way His word instructs.

We should not add to the word of God, take away from it, or distort it. (Deut. 4:2, Deut 12:32, Prov 30:5-6, Galatians 1:6-9, Rev. 22:18-19, 1 Cor 4:6, 2 John 9, et al)

Like it says in Numbers 22:18, "I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God to do less or more!"

We should be satisfied to worship as God's word has instructed.
