It depends on what you believe about God's foreknowledge and power. Many Christians believe that God has ordained people to do certain things, or in other words he has a plan for everyone. So in this way we would be like Chess pieces in God's game, or however you would like to look at it. Still others believe that God's knows what we are going to do, but he hasn't made it this way. We actually have free will and make all our own decisions without God ordaining them. Thirdly some people believe that we have complete free will, and God really doesn't know what we are going to do. I think that if you believe the latter two of the three we are not like Chess pieces, but if you believe the first then we are. Hope this helps.

I've asked myself the same question. I feel like a pawn in
some kind of cosmic power struggle that I had no part in creating. A choosing game. Pick this and live, or, pick this and die. What if I refuse to pick either one. Just walk away
and leave THEM wondering? You want to fight? Take it out to Jupiter somewhere and just do it, man. Leave me out of it. I
didn't start it, and I don't want any part of it.
What kills me is that God supposedly gave us free-will, but
only two choices. What's up with that?

More like jewels.

"Then they that feared the Lord spoke often one to another: and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, says the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels, and I will spare them as a man spares his own son that serves him. Then shall you return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that serves him not" (Malachi 3:16-18).
