The Bible tells us that Christ resided 3 days and 3 nights in his sepulcher, thats 3 periods of daylight and 3 periods of night time. According to my maths that equates to 72 hours...How does anyone derive a 72 hour period from good friday afternoon till early hours easter Sunday morning, It's just not POSSIBLE... Either Christ wasn't in his Sepulcher 72 hours, which makes the bible wrong or he wasn't crucified on Fri and rose on Sun morn....

Each year many observe "Good Friday", the day they believe that Jesus was crucified. Then "Easter" Sunday will be observed as the day Christ arose from the dead. But was Jesus truly crucified on a Friday and resurrected on a Sunday Morning? And does it really matter?
The Sign of Jonah
If you believe in Jesus as the Messiah, then it does matter, because the only sign which would be given to prove that He was the promised Messiah is the sign of Jonah.
When the Jewish religious leaders asked Jesus for a sign to prove that He was sent from God, Jesus answered,- "An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet NO SIGN shall be given to it BUT THE SIGN OF JONAH the prophet. For just as Jonah was THREE DAYS and THREE NIGHTS in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of man be THREE DAYS and THREE NIGHTS in the heart of the earth." (Matthew 12:39-40)
Jesus said, not only three DAYS but also three NIGHTS.
That is 72 hours in the grave.

Your right!
the testimony of an angel, spoken to the women who came early Sunday morning to embalm the body. "He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay" (Matthew 28:6). Jesus had promised that He would be exactly three days and three nights in the tomb and He rose just exactly as He said He would.
But," many will respond, "doesn’t the Bible say that Jesus was crucified and buried on Friday and that the tomb was empty on Sunday morning?" It is true that the tomb was already empty on Sunday morning, but the Bible nowhere speaks of a Friday crucifixion. It does say that He was crucified on the "preparation day" (Mark 15:42–45), but we must recognize which preparation day this was. Remember, the Bible speaks of annual Sabbaths—"Holy Days"—in addition to the weekly Sabbath (cf., Leviticus 23:4, 7, 24, 27–32). Jesus was crucified on the preparation day before an annual Sabbath, during the daylight portion of the Passover—Abib 14 on the Hebrew calendar. The following day—Abib 15—is an annual Holy Day, the first Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread
Passover fell on a Wednesday in 31ad, the year of Jesus’ crucifixion. Thursday was an annual Sabbath, the first Holy Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Jesus was buried just before sunset on Wednesday afternoon, and was in the tomb Wednesday night, Thursday, Thursday night, Friday, Friday night, and Saturday—three days and three nights, just as He promised. He was resurrected just before sunset on Saturday afternoon, exactly 72 hours after His burial. On Sunday morning, when the women came at dawn to embalm His body, He was already gone. They did not see the resurrection; they saw an empty tomb, and were told by an angel that He had risen just as He said He would.

That's a great question. Does the Bible claim in the gospels that Jesus was dead for 72 hours? It does say "on the third day He will rise again." Jesus Himself predicted it. Does the Christian faith actually stand on whether Jesus was crucified on Thursday or Friday and then rose on Sunday morning? No. it stands on the fact of the gospel event itself. Did Jesus die and rise again? Whether it was Thursday or Friday is insignificant. If the Bible said Friday and it actually was Thursday we might have a problem, but the Bible makes no such claim. By the way, the Jews of the northern Palestine reckoned their time differently than the Jews from southern Palestine. One started the day at 6am and the other at midnight if I'm not mistaken.

The majority of Western culture is based on the fact that Jesus was born and died and rose again - our calendar (ie 2006) and most of our laws are based on Christianity! Jesus died and was buried on Friday, in the grave Saturday and rose again Sunday - so that's 3 days but nowhere does it say 3 nights! IF there was no such man as Jesus WHY does He influence a lot of our society in the West?

Jewish time is divided into 4 watches. The first watch starts at 6pm. Jesus died at 3 o'clock in the afternoon of Friday and rose from the tomb on Sunday morning. Counting Friday as one day, Jesus was dead for 2 1/2 days. By the way, the Bible does not say he was in the tomb for three days and three nights.
Happy Easter!

The actual statement made was Matthew 12:40 "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." The word heart (kardia) refers to the the power and influence of something. Jesus was arrest on Thursday night, at which point he was placed in the "heart" or "influence" of the earth. It is not a reference to being buried, or in a grave. You will not find either word in any of Jesus statements about that time. Rather it is a reference to being under the control of the earth and its evil.
He was three night (Thursday through Saturday) and three days (Friday through Sunday) under the "heart" or control of the earth.

If this is what the bible really does say then that means he was crucified on Thursday night. In the bible times the day starts from sundown and ends at sundown. Today is friday so where you are at if the sun is down that means it is saturday. We say it's friday night.
I hope this makes sense to you. My pastor was talking about this once with a guy that said the same thing, and I am very sure it was thursday night.
I just read what Eric T wrote and that may be what happend.

You're right.
You cannot jam 3 days and 3 nights between "Good" Friday Evening and "Easter" Sunday morning.
The good Friday/Easter Sunday celebration is an example of the traditions of man, which were condemned by Christ.

Hi. Happy Sabbath & Easter. You're right. Jesus didn't die on Friday and rise again on Sunday. That time frame doesn't fit Bible prophesy. Sadly, traditions and misinterpretations have become popular and accepted... To fulfill prophesy, all started on Thursday; not Friday. Take care.

My Bible(NIV) doesn't say three whole days, or even 72 hours, or even 3 days and 3 nights. It just says three days. It could have been Friday, Saturday, and part of Sunday. That's still three days.
