What makes it corn liquor and what makes it poison?

Ethanol is made by an aerobic fermentation process (using yeast) that produces ethyl alcohol. It is corn liquor if it is made from corn.

However to use it as fuel it has to be distilled and all of this takes a great deal of energy.

Methanol is produced by anaerobic digestion which produces methane gas (and thus does not need to be distilled) which can be combined with steam to turn it into methanol.

It is poisonous to consume but far more efficient and can be used just about every application as ethanol and is superior in many. For example the methane can be compressed and sold as a form of bottled gas similar to propane.

So what makes the difference are air or no air, because of the kind of bacteria that do the work, and that ethanol require sugar where methanol uses almost any organic material.

Both can be used directly as a fuel or as part of the chemistry for making biodiesel.

Ethanol is being pushed by big industry because it uses almost as much petroleum in making it as you get in the end and so the oil companies don't lose their profits and the big agro chemical industries get their subsidies.

Methane on the other hand can be made from anything, yard waste like leaves, weeds or grass clippings, sawdust, paper, animal manure, sewage, even dead bodies.

Ethanol is ethane hydroxide and methanol is methane hydroxide. Both are poisons but ethanol takes a lot longer to kill you (In fact, if used properly ethanol won't kill you, it will just get you drunk). The way I see it is that we shouldn't use ethanol as a fuel, because we don't want a bunch of drunk cars driving around.
