Usually a wedding reception is ordered thus:
-people gather, mingle, often over cocktails.
-Bride and groom arrive - often make an entrance with a special song, sometimes creating a receiving line to welcome the guests.
-Toasts are said before
-meal is served.
- dancing - often beginning with the bride and groom's first dance and including special dances (such as father/daughter, mother/son)
-cake cutting
-bouquet toss
-the bridal couple generally leaves before the guests.

Start with the announcement of the parents and bridal party. Then the wedding toast, then dinner. After dinner cut the cake (don't wait or you'll be stuck with lots of cake). Start with the bridal dance, have the bridal party join in or use a second song for them to join in on. Father-daughter, then Mother-son. Sometimes they do the dollar dance, sometimes they don't, but the bride and groom should dance with their guests even if they don't call it a "dollar" dance. When the guests dance is coming to a close whip the crowd up into a frenzy with a song everyone can fast dance to......and get the party started.

This is how mine was...we had the receiving line for the first 30-45 minutes or so, then we had dinner, and after we'd been eating for about 15-20 minutes there was sort of a performance part, my mom and my aunt sang and my uncle played the piano (my family are all musicians) and then my relatives made toasts. Then when everyone had finished dinner we cut the cake, and then we had dancing for about an hour, and then I threw the bouquet. Then there was dancing for a bit longer (maybe another half hour?) and then we left and everyone blew bubbles at us on our way out.

Guests will most likely arrive at reception site before you and hubby. Have soft music playing, the bar open, finger foods. When you and hubby arrive the DJ can announce your arrival and the fun can begin. Mingle amongst guests and when you are ready for dinner, lead the way. After the dinner, a few toasts, cut your cake, toss your bouquet, bride and dad dance, mom and groom dance, and let the party begin/

We did this...
4pm-Wedding
4:30-We took pictures, guest has drinks & or'dourves (which I'm sure I spelled very badly).
5:15-We entered the room again & danced our first dance
5:20-Dinner was served
6:20ish-We did toast (both dads) & cut our cake
6:30 cake was served & dancing started.
Turned out very good & everyone had a great time.

we didn't 'schedule' our reception and it's been 20 years and people still talk about how much fun it was! We had a blast, we (bride and groom and bride's family) stayed until the last guest left....it was awesome...
