I is currently still serving although no longer in the numbers it once was. I doubt that production will ever be restarted and hopefully we will figure out a means of doing without war and thus no longer need great bombers.

I doubt they will make new airframes. The existing G models are all upgrades from the existing 50's line. There are some BUFF pilots who wernt even born when thier planes were rolled off the line. Its going to be cheaper to modify a existing aircraft than to A) Re-tool a factory B) Retrain builders C) Retest and reintegrate systems. Read Flight of the Old Dog (or any of the series) by Dale Brown to see exactly the potential the 52 still has. Its said that they will still be in service in 2050

The B-52 IS still on active duty with the Air Force. Out of the 744 built since 1954 , 85 remain in service...
BUILDING more would be insanely cost-prohibitive !! Boeing probably doesn't have the jigs and production line.
Rumor has it that the BUFF will remain in service until 2040 !!

It hasn't left the inventory. There's still B-52's in active service, and they're expected to be in the inventory for the next several decades.
As for putting them back into production...why? The military has gone to a "one bomb, one kill" mode and a bomber that was designed to drop a lot of bombs all at once doesn't fit that philosophy. Heavy bombers have also been proven to be vulnerable to anti-aircraft weapons, making them less effective.

They still fly around the country with them it is just being reported now because it was not the right payload for the mission and people are freaking like it is dangerous. it could have been bad if the bombs were drooped on a practice target but that does not mean they would detonate. In order to go nuclear they have to have the proper and current code put in them and the crew would not have had it if it was thought to be conventional weapons. so the only risk was that they drooped steel on target it did not explode and EOD would go clear it and find it was a nuke. You people act like thees things are armed time bombs and the slightest bump will destroy the northern hemisphere

The military has not yet sent this excellent plane into the scrap pile. They're still flying in high altitute bombing runs in specific areas of the present conflict.

We still have them in active service. They just have been upgraded and modified. Kind of like the M2 .50 cal machine gun, if it ain't broke don't fix it. We will keep usingthis majestic plane for a very very long time to come and hopefully ain't no one taking my M2 no time soon!................Shadow Stalker
