If I had a time machine and a sniper rifle and went back to the dawn of man and found the first hominid...Australopithecus Afarensus, and shot him/her...would I effectively be able to wipe out the human race before it ever got born, a la Terminator style?

Too circular. You would wipe out yourself, so you would never have gone back with the rifle...

Ignoring the obvious paradox, evolution is based on statistical movement of whole populations. If you killed one, supposedly the evolutionary pressures that made it would make another, and so forth. So basically, if you did kill the first one, it wouldn't be the first one, so you didn't kill it, and couldn't.

Now if you went with Creationism, you might have a chance of taking out Adam or Eve.

Nahhh, y'wouldn't have to do the sniper rifle thing....just explain to them what humanity has become and they'd probably kill themselves as a way of apologizing!!!!

(Hey! It makes as much sense as your question!!! LOL!!!)

Yes, but even a time machine couldn't stop you from becoming the pathetic dork you are today.
