Im going to UC Santa Barbara next year which is heavily white but I wanted to join a frat. Is it unusual for a black guy to get into a very white frat?

Use intimidation my friend. Unzip your pants and scare off the LITTLE white boys. Just wave the magic stick! No need to thank me when they make you President!!!

I would like to start by saying that you should join any organization who mission and values are in line with your own. I think that you should spend time with the member to see if they are actually living up to the mission of the organization. If you spend time with them you also would determine if you can join their organization.
If you have selected an organization you should be prepared to confront unintentional racism and ignorant comments that may be said in everyday conversation and at parties while drunk. You are placing yourself in a role that would make you a token and some white people are looking at you to represent all black people and they may think that for the rest of their lives.
Whatever you choose to do - do it with confidence. Never place yourself in a position where you are abused physically, emotionally, or verbally. It isn't worth it.
There are frats that won't do that to you.

When I went to college, just about every white fraternity/sorority had one black member, and that was some years ago, in a less progressive area of the country than Cali, so I can't see that it would be a problem. But you do realize that there are black fraternities also, right? Why not join one of those?

Why would a black man do that. Personally I think frats are stupid. But if you want to buy some friends that is your choice. But why not join a black fraternity instead. You may as well join the clan. Have you lost all of your identity. Can you no longer relate to black people. People like you need to join black fraternities. So you can learn how to love yourself.

Hello, I hate to say it but yeah it is hard. They'll probably make some comments about it but that's how it is in reverse. Like Eminem when he was trying to come up as a rapper, everyone had a comment about him being white but he ignored it and became an amazing rapper who is respected by whites as well as blacks. You have to strive for what you want regardless. I believe in you. Good luck!
