As long as the vendor has de-registered the copy of XP you will be fine. Even if they haven't, as long as you can establish that this copy of XP is a genuine copy and is only installed on one machine (ie yours) you are still covered by the licence.
The EULA only prohibits concurrent installation on more than one machine, so if, for example, the original machine has been scrapped, or destroyed in a fire, you would be ok using that copy of XP.

Not unless your computer is a dell make and you get a second copy of a windows xp dell cd.
I would forget about windows all together if you don't want to pay for the operating system and go through all the hassle.
Try requesting or downloading and burning Ubuntu and using it an as os instead. It's user friendly and linux based with familiar gui interfaces.
you can get it, or request it here : www.ubuntu.org
There's also other versions of linux that are free and easw to use like linux xp .
Make sure you have the system requirements on your pc to run these operating systems.

I'm sure you can as I had XP on one of my systems, however the motherboard burnt out so I re-built a new system. Re-install my XP onto the new system, when I went to activate it it said to contact Microsoft which I did and explained to them that the software is now ONLY on the new system, Microsoft allowed me to do this and I'm still getting all the new updates.
Hope this helps you.

When I bought my Windows CD, it said to keep the product key in case I needed to reinstall Windows. That leads me to believe you would be able to download the Microsoft updates. However, I'm not 100% sure.

A second hand copy that has already been registered will come back as not being genuine. So, you would not be able to download updates.
