Sherlock Holmes is a fictional master detective written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the late Victorian Era. He used early forensics and deductive reasoning to solve very intricate crimes. But, no he wasn't a cop. He did work with the police, and turn criminals over to them, but he worked privately.
Sherlock holems is perhaps his evil twin. Or maybe the Cowboy version, as in hol'em there Sherlock. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

To get your best answer, go to Wikipedia.com and type in Sherlock Holmes in the search box, you will get a big article on him, which I don't feel like reproducing or finding a way to fit here.
