A Jack Russell Terrier might fit your description. They are small, definitely high spirited, and very smart. I actually have one, and she is very protective of me. Three warnings/advice I would give would be- get them as a puppy so that it can be socialized with people, other animals and other dogs (or an adult that had been socialized as a puppy would work just as well) they are a little hard to socialize as adults if they haven't been socialized when they are young. Secondly, make sure you train it. They are very smart, so they are (usually) easily trained, and if they are not trained, they will try to get away with anything. Lastly, since they are energetic, make sure that you would have time to take it on a walk often.

Generally dogs with papers are much more expensive than dogs with papers. For example, in my local newspaper, a purebred Jack Russell with papers can be $500 or so, but a pure bred, unpapered dog can be $150-$250. They are definitely worth the investment.

Hope that's been helpful. :)

I have a Cocker Spaniel and she is very loyal and loves kids. She is a great apartment dog and very high spirited but as far as protective all she will do is bark. I get lots of comments on how beautiful she is and what a sweet girl I have.

If you want a really loyal dog who is small in stature I recommend the Boston Terrier. They are a really neat breed who range between 10 and 25lbs. They are noted as being the "Gentlemen among dogs". They are a bit funny looking and they snore but I think that's half the appeal of them. But good luck with your search, and remember: Your dog is only as loyal as you are to your dog!

I owned a mix breed dog. He was half terrier and half cocker spaniel. He lived to be 18yrs old and was the best and brightest little dog I have ever had! I loved him so very much, when he died I cried like a baby, nevertheless...any type of mixed breed dog is a good dog to have, they are very intelligent, and seem to be healthier and live longer then purebred dogs. They are also cheaper to purchase and there are so many of them looking for homes in our shelters.

Good luck and always remember...a dog is truly mans (and woman's) best friend!

Well most smaller dogs aren't very protective, a medium dog would fit well into an apartment (my older sister has a corgi shiba-inu mix in hers)
I think a French Bulldog, they are cute (in my opinion) not necessarily small, but medium, very protective, intelligent, obedient, loyal and loving.

But I also just think they're adorable :p

Silky Terriers (related to Yorkies) are very loyal, very protective and great in an apartment as long as you take them on regular walks.

They love kids as long as they are socialized around them from a young age. Just make sure to supervise the children as they can get hurt by over zealous children. My silky is very high spirited.

Price wise. Their pretty good. Not as much as Yorkies. You may have to purchase out of state, as they are slightly harder to find.

Good luck in choosing your new "fur baby".

Every dog is born loyal. It's a part of their "pack mentality".
As long as you take the time to bond with you dog - that is take them for walks, play with them, groom them, and in general pay attention to them, they will look to you as a pack member. The most important part is to make sure that you and not the dog is the pack leader. Dogs respond to a strong leader.(Don't take that to mean you have to be harsh, simply assure that you are in charge of the relationship.)

Weiner dogs!!!! They don't come any more loyal than this. They have such wonderful little personalities. However, they can be expensive. Check www.petfinder.com to search pet shelters/rescue groups near you. There are several around that rescue only dachshunds.
