you can over hydrate yourself and dilute your electrolytes by drinking too much water. It can cause your heart to stop due to what is called the sodium potassium exchange required for muscles to contract. 64 oz per day is plenty.

Once I went on a water and pretzel diet. It was stupid and I never did loose much weight, but I was drinking up to 120 oz of water a day. I felt fine until I was into this for about a week and then I started getting really bad headaches and aching all the time. My dr. told me I was drinking too much water and to add some fruit juices or decaf tea back into my diet...and to eat more than pretzels!

You will know when you are close. You won't want to drink the water if you're about to get sick from it, your body will send you warning signals like nausea, excessive sweating. It's not all that common, and it only happens when you force it down regardless of how ill you feel. I wouldn't even worry about it.

You should't be drinking any more than 70oz of water per day, unless you're exercising 7 hours a day, then perhaps you should drink one gallon.
