I am looking at getting a Ford Explorer or Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 4x4 for my first car for around $5,000 with around 100k miles. I have been in them and they feel like a comfortable car, and they have plenty of storage room in the back. The acceleration is great, along with the roar of the engine. Once I buy it, I would maybe put an exhaust and a new sound system in. Does this sound alright, and what do you think about it? Don't try to talk me into getting some Japanese car that gets 100mpg, because I love American cars and engines, or that getting the v6 is better mileage, because its only like one mpg.

They do have good acceleration, and with the exhaust, you should even a little quicker. Ford is reliable, and the 5.0 is amazing. Good Luck.

My Ranger has the 2.9L V6, and for its size it does have reasonable power. However, its not powerful enough for me, I'm doign a 302 swap (ripped out, of a Foxbody Mustang, and rebuilt to my specs). I'm glad to hear that someone is looking at a Ford for their first vehicle. My Ranger was my second vehicle. Its been the best I've owned, and its in the top of my favorite to drive (I work in a garage and drive a lot. I had a 1999 Porsche Boxster in the shop a few weeks ago, did not like in a bit, the 2000 Dodge Viper was fun but cramped for my likings. The 1989 Volvo 740 with the 302 swap was my absolute favorite vehicle I have ever driven, and its a 5.0L, imagine that). I'm almost jealus of you for getting it. If you looking for more information on this vehicle, or if you're looking for ideas to do to it, check out the forums on www.therangerstation.com. There is a section for V8's and another section for Explorers, as well as a large archive sections of other things. I'm a member there (shoeboy) and they have helped me out a lot. They are very knowledgable and helpful. I hope you get it, and many happy miles to you.

The ford explorer has been the best selling suv for years, and for good reason. Although i am not a fan of them, they still are a decent truck for the money. A lot of mods are available, put a nice exhaust and nice tires on and you are good to go.
And i agree, the difference in gas mileage only makes more sense to get the v8, you'll love it.

Oh God. Another teen boy on the road with a giant SUV.
Look. Virtually all teen boys wreck their first cars soon. Have mercy on the rest of us and drive something smaller.
Plus with 100k miles, I hope you know how to fix cars, because you'll be doing a fair amount of that. Also I hope you make good money to afford gas.
I have no love for Japanese cars either. There are plenty of quality American used cars that you can buy for $5k.

The Explorer is not a bad vehicle. Just remember two things. First, it doesn't handle well, so drive a little more carefully. Second, four wheel drive helps you go, but it doesn't do anything for stopping, so be careful in slick situations.
