Absolutely. People in primitive societies are more knowledgeable of this aspect of reality than most Westerners.
Actually though, the phrase "possessed by the devil" is the result of a poor translation of the original Greek of the New Testament. In most instances the phrase would be better translated "afflicted by a demon", or quite literally "demonized".
Even the demoniac of the Gadarenes was not so totally controlled by the demons in him that he could not come to Jesus for help.

Normally Satan does not possess anyone.
He has his legion of demons doing that, and yes I believe its happening more and more as I read the news.
Insanity can cause people to do strange things, but I think its demonic influence when a woman puts her newborn in a microwave or sells her baby for money to buy meth, or someone chops a person up and keeps pieces of the dead in a freezer, or the woman who said voices told her to throw her babies into the ocean, etc.
Demons can influence the personality, and is not merely a word for schizophrenic illness, for that is merely one person projecting a different aspect of his own mind.
Demon possession is a condition in which one or more evil spirits inhabit the body of a human being and take complete control of their victim at will.
In Scripture, Mark 5, suggest 8 distinct symptoms of possession: indwelling of unclean spirit, unusual physical strength, fits or rages, resistance to spiritual things, clairvoyant powers, alteration of voice, occult transference and disintegration of the personality.
Remember no Christian who is walking in fellowship with God and obeying God's Word can become demon possessed. If a so-called Christian opens himself up to the occult, look out. That would be fortune telling, astrology, palmistry, card laying, Ouija boards, crystal balls, water dowsing, and psychometry etc.

Of course demons still exist. They will until they are all thrown in the Lake Of Fire when Jesus returns. I believe people today can be possessed.

I think they still exist. I think it is unusual to encounter a demon, but I see no reason why they would be in the past only.

There is so much unexplained evil in this world, there must be.
You have mothers killing their own children, 16 year old kids being killed in drug wars, road rage cases, children being taken for sex acts and then killed. Would any normal person do this?
You may say this is mental illness, well, that just may be what we call it in today's world.
