It really depends on what your sorry for... and you have to know what that person wants to hear -- and really it also depends on who you are writing it for!

But to be general I guess you can say..

Dear so and so,

There are so many words I can say but I won't waste your time -- just know that I am very sorry for my actions and the effect that it has had on you....

Thanks for your time,

Me

I take it that this is a personal one (not a business one).

Try not to rub salt into old wounds. State that you felt bad about it and you were not thinking/ or you were off when you did what you did because....

End it with where you want the relation to go... Such as "I hope we can move beyond this..."

Give the receiptant time to digest it. If they are mature about things they will come around, if they don't maybe you should just step away and give them more time.

Best of luck.

This is a hard letter for me to write. I need to tell you how sorry I am for _______. I have no words to tell you how bad I feel. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

Keep it short and simple.

Dear.................

I wish to apologise for............................................ and the distress and upset it may have caused.

I am truly sorry.

(You could offer to make amends here)

Sincerely,

You.

Don't waffle on, it just gets you in deeper and could be thought of as insincere.
