What about a beach theme? Pottery Barn has great towels, shower curtain, and even a surfboard shaped bath mat. I would deem that something that wouldn't be too over the top "cutesy". You could take one of the colours to paint the bathroom. If you keep that part neutral the rest of the bathroom won't look too overdone. Then you can always change things out as the children get older.
Have fun!

Go with color; for my boys' bathroom (also the 'company' bathroom) I found a shower curtain that was clear with dots of teal, blue, green and white on it, then found corresponding towel and mats. All the sink accessories are clear plastic (they're under 5). While I haven't gotten any compliments on it, I think it's a bright and cheerful room and was easily decorated on a budget.
Other than that, I've noticed a lot of kids' bathroom with bright tropical fish themes; the colors are girly, but the theme is kind of boyish so it seems to be unisex.

RE:
Unisex theme ideas for children's bathroom?
I'm planning on redecorating our spare bath in a unisex children's theme. I want something child-like but not too cutesy because guests also use this bathroom. Also, I would prefer not to use any wallpaper or border.
I would love any ideas and photos/links to photos would be very...

They are both great ideas and I struggling with the same thing. Its difficult to buy everything with the unisex theme in mind. I love the monkey idea as green is a neutral colour and its what Im planning to base my nursery on. Yellow seems too feminine to me. Good luck with your pregnancy and decision.xx

Maybe decorate it with some sort of animal, the shower curtains, towels, toothbrush holders, soap holders, etc. Children love animals, and it would look nice for adults too. Something like turtles? That's just what pops into my mind =]

Go with a Safari theme.
Also, there's a catalog called "Land of Nod" that have beautiful rooms for both boys and girls that are classic and not cutesy or cheesy.

How about frogs. They have some really cute ones for bathrooms. It would make your guests smile. Or maybe stars. or a boat and beach theme. That would be cute.
