Start out learning 3 chords. D C and G. Many MANY songs out there whether it be rock metal or pop use those 3 chords. Buy Guitar world magazines, and learn to read tab. When you climb the ladder a little, then get guitar lessons. They will give the rest of the knowledge you need.

1. Buy a guitar chord book having basic music theory.
2. Learn by heart all the chords possible, but especially which chords fit in each key signature.
3. Learn how to read music notation first, tablature second.
4. If possible, secure an instructor or good friend that can show you what mistakes to avoid while learning.
5. Watch others perform.
6. Take care of your instrument.

Start by learning where the notes are on the neck of the guitar. Once you learn that, find a teacher to learn technique, and style. You'll be glad you did.

I've played music for 45 yrs. and the most wise way is to get with an instructor. They can show you and let you hear the processes your hands can handle and your ears hear best.

Buy a Mel Bay chord book, listen to your favorite songs and try to pick them up, then if all else fails, take lessons.
