Has science benefited from religion? Has religion helped critical thinking and skepticism or has it hurt it?

No. Blind belief in something without evidence can't contribute to the progress of science, which requires evidence.

There are many religious scientists, some very famous ones as well (Maxwell, for instance) but their religion didn't contribute to their science. God didn't give them the answers, and they didn't get them by praying. They learned about science by doing science.

EDIT: Wow. Circles. Never heard of those before god! Maxwell's work was based on science. Thinking of another shape is not religion contributing to science.

Also of early scientists were monks and prists, at least in europ. cause they were the only ones who were educated. So with out religion many early discoverys would not have happened. religion was mans way of explaining the earth before we knew all the details. religion created science. so science has definetly benefited from religion.

In HInduism, vedas in particular have.
ayurveda ( natural medicine now funded by usa in two universities), Yoga, astronomy ( units of measurements of length and time were clearly defined ), architecture, construction ( high raise temples needed great engineering skills ).
There are still unknown things which faded with time.

A couple of times. The guy who discovered the magnetic field did so because of Christianity. Other scientists were thinking of electricity soley in terms of straight lines, but he saw everything in terms of celestial circles. He was, in this case, right, and thanks to him we have the electric motor.
