I have a 20 year old microwave and I'm finally upgrading to an over-the-range model. However, I WANT it to vent to the outside. My regular range hood vent re-circulates through a filter and it has never done a good job. And since the range is on an outside wall, it shouldn't be too difficult to vent to the outside. I've set off the smoke detector countless times just by sauteeing something, so I'm figuring venting to the outside would avoid that.

I've checked out over-the-range microwaves and have gotten different opinions on venting to the outside. Some stores say YES, you should and they will, others say NO they never vent to the outside.

So, I'm looking for other opinions and would love to know the actual REASONS for venting (or not venting) to the outside. Thank you!

Hey Elaine,

I install them - they can vent either inside or outside.

Please open a container you're selling and read the directions. Then sell them.

lol

I should mention the recirculation system you're talking about rotates on an axis inside the unit and can be unscrewed and reset to be in either of two different positions. Inside or outside.

That's why they send two templates for installation.

I would have someone (Home Depot) or an approved person handle your remodel. My present microwave over my range top is vented to the outside but in my new home I will have a microwave/convection that will be vented inside. When done properly, either is fine. Just make sure you have someone professional do it.

Microhoods dont vent to the outside, they have a recirculating filter that you have to change. There is no microwave hood that is made to vent outside. If you want to vent outside, you need a regular hood that has a blower and the ducts need to run to your outside wall. Of course it is better, it gets the smoke and grease and toxic cooking gasses and odors completely out of the house.

the fun part is aligning all the holes so the vent tube will fit with minimal flex. Using s 5" template and a jig saw works better then the "Drilling of multiple holes" and it will give a cleaner look.
