The problem is she was lionized by the military and media as having fought against the ambushers after being wounded, until she was unable to fight any more. Plus there were tales of her resisting interrogation and God knows what.

She later acknowledged this was a fabrication. Apparently her weapon jammed straight away (she didn't know how to maintain it, which is a growing problem in the Army now), and she didn't know how to clear the jam, so she just gave up.

Then she was taken to a civilian hospital where the Iraqis treated her quite well. Civilian hospitals tend to do that.

She was basically used for propoganda at the time, because all wars need public heroes...

Insanely enough, when we DID have REAL heroes, like one Sergeant who saved a whole platoon by manning a gun in a burning Hummer to defend against Republican Guards in Baghdad, dying and winning the first Medal of Honor in ten years in the process, we didn't hear about it.

I happen to agree with her - that she is not a hero. What did she do to make her a hero. She was captured by the enemy and she did not resist capture. That in itself doesn't make her a criminal, and it sure doesn't make her a hero. The fact that she survived her ordeal is great - however, look at what has happened to soldiers and contractors who have been captured by the enemy since then... they sure weren't taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries (like she was). So, while I am happy for her, and glad she made it out alive, I do think it had more to do with politics than her actions that she was declared a hero.

America must have needed a feel good story at the time. She didn't do anything to warrant hero status . She finally came clean later and told the truth.

usually, POWs shouldn't be considered heros. if they are, then what do you call those who refuse to surrender and die fighting to the last bullet?

the exception I would consider would be senator John macain, To endure 5years of prison in Vietnam during the war was hell on earth. And he found a way to survive. That, i will call a hero.

She never claimed to be a hero, which works out well because she isn't one. Merely surviving a traffic accident and a shootout doesn't make one a hero.

She told reporters that she didn't remember what happened to her, but yet she wrote a book and got millions for it. It just seems like something is not right with her. She really did nothing heroic. The men who rescued her from that nasty hospital room are the real heroes. She should be on her knees everyday thanking God for those men.

She was given that label by the media. It wasn't really her fault but she did her best to debunk that label.
The true hero was the troop who protected her.
Still........he may not have actually appreciated being called a 'hero' ................................
Dead soldiers never come back and tell us they were glad to have died as "heroes" anyway.
Most likely they would have preferred to keep livng.

She really wasn't, the guy who was protecting her, shielding her from the bullets was actually the hero, and he died. America made her out to be the hero.
