I tried baking those half-white, half dark checkerboard cookies with butter and they turned out really nasty. I don't know if it's because I used salted butter, bu they tasted like playdough.
My friend doesn't like the taste of butter and I was wondering why you can't find any molded-cookie recipes that don't call for butter. I know for checkerboard ones you have to freeze them and then mold them to make it easier, would oil interfere with this? thanks a lot.

You can use shortening instead of butter (like Crisco for example). Might not taste the same, but if your friend doesn't like butter then it probably won't make a big difference. Oil also works, although I have never completely substitued oil for butter in a recipe, so all I can say is try it in a small batch and see how it works!

Try margarine or shortening (Crisco).
