Navy SEALs are a "go in and blow it up" force.
They do demolitions, sniping, intel collection, etc.
Their training is very focused on physical conditioning, a couple of simple skills (God, are they terrible marksmen), insertion/exfil techniques, and that's about it.
Marine Recon...I don't know much about them, really. I'll leave that to someone else.
Green Berets are "the" Special Forces. Their official name is Special Forces, and they wear green berets. They "go native," interacting with local forces, conducting training, interfacing between US forces and natives, collecting intel, performing raids, etc. They can deploy for one mission for months without a lot of support. Their language skills are important, more so than to the other forces mentioned.
Delta Force are very shadowy. They do counter-terrorist operations, snatch-n-grab of important targets, protection of high value people (the new Afghan president used to be surrounded by Deltas), etc. They're pretty much the elite of the elite...you don't apply, you get asked to join once you've distinguishd yourself in a unit like Special Forces or the Rangers. They also frequently do not operate in uniform, even on base in the United States, to try to keep a low profile.
Deltas are widely regarded as the premier CQB force in the world.

Here is the hierarchy from most elite on down:
1. Delta Force - Counter Terrorism, draws from all other groups. DOD does not acknowledge their existence.
2. Green Berets - Does unconventional warfare and embeds with foreign forces. Highly sustainable in small groups without support.
2. Navy Seals - Equally as skilled as the Green Berets. Do underwater recon, infiltration, demolitions and espionage
3. Army Rangers - Rapidly deployable, Airborne advanced infantry. Fights mostly conventional warfare
3. Marine Recon - Goes ahead of main landing body. Conventional warfare as well.
3. Air Force Para rescue Jumpers (PJ's) search and rescue in front of and behind enemy lines.

Its all different btanches of service. they also do different jobs. While seals do recon they are more often used in the way of assualt. Marine Recon and Froce Recon are their more often to scout get what they need unseen ,and get out. Green berets, Rangers, Delta, wold go in to a place where the enemy knows they are comeing. Wahct Black Hawk Down. Never was in the Army.

Delta Force is anti-terrorism, much like a version of SWAT and created after all those hijackings in the '70s.
Green Berets train the locals to fight against "the enemy."
Marine recon scouts the area ahead of the main force.
Navy Seals are basically in the field military spies, both underwater and on land.

Different branches of the service. I assume Seals and Marines are used when deployment is easiest by water. Green Berets and Delta Force would be used when deployment is easiest by air.

Delta Force is the most elite unit. They usually have the toughest missions, and most classified. I know for a time, the US military didn't even aknowledge they were real. I'm not sure about it now.

I would say that Coast Guard ASTs (the ones who saved people's lives in Katrina) and Coast Guard Surfmen are the elitely trained in the Coast Guard, not to mention our boarding officers who are our elite Law Enforcement leaders.)
Don't forget that just because the Coast Guard is not DOD..it IS still a military service...
