Why did Jesus descend into hell after his death?

Free the lost spirits or something?

I don't read creeds. I don't need them it's all in the Bible.. Here is what he did during that time : Jim
Ephesians 4:8-10
Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

By hell was meant purgatory. The word was the same for both in the original language because purgatory and hell are basically the same place, except that in purgatory there is hope because you will eventually get out. Jesus went there to preach to the souls before he went to heaven.

A poor translation. In the Catholic Church the phrase is understood to refer to the Limbo of the Fathers .i.e. the folk who died before Christ's redeeming sacrifice and who were destined for heaven after the price of their sins was paid.
