First have him rub his upper lip with his tongue, until it is very wet and puffy, then quickly put on a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment (not cream). If not available, then use Neosporin Ointment (not cream).

Wetting his lip with his tongue gives his lip the kind of moisture those cells need, before the ointment seals that wetness in. It will also keep him from licking the ointment off.

The ointment will help the flakes to come loose, so when you see that, rub "lightly" with a water-soaked washcloth, then repeat: Lick 'til puffy-wet first, ointment second, no more lickin' 'til next time.

Washcloth before meals, of course, then repeat. I love to hear little ones say what to do!

You're lookin' at maybe a day to a day and a half for a cure. Remember to include the routine after brushing teeth, until your house heat (A/C if in warmer climate) is off.

this will sound weird but it does work

Blue Goo cracked heel skin softener

Both of my kids are chronic lip lickers and always had chapped lips until I tried this when I couldn't find anything else. It is made with Emu oil and is very thick . It smells kinda weird and tastes like vegetable oil. no matter how much the kids like their lips after using this stuff it does not come off unless you wipe it off and still not all of it come off. you can find it at Wal Mart in the foot care area

Blistex is amazing! Buy the white ointment stuff in the tube instead of the lip balms. It smells like the doctors office, whcih means you know it works!!! haha :) just squeeze some onto his lips (amount depends on severety) get him to rub his lips together and DONT LICK IT it doesnt taste very good :P But is seriously works wonders. It doesnt hurt, but it does tingle for a second but causes no discomfort.

Vaseline

I have used plain Vaseline, or any lipbalm with Sheabutter for my 5 yr old.The main thing is that when they are that little, they keep licking their lips and that is what makes them even drier, so talk to the little one and explain it. What also worked for me is giving my 5 yr old his own lipbalm( he is a boy and loves lipbalm!) so he can apply it whenever his lips are dry rather than licking his lips ( caution with the flaovored ones, they smell so good that it might encourage them to lick or eat)
Also when I am in need of lipbalm( usualy when I drive) I ask the kids if they have dry lips too and that usualy prompts them to use theirs ( I have a 5yr old boy and an almost 3 yr old girl). I hope this works for your little one.Good Luck!

my son is 13 and since he was about 6 his upper lip gets very chapped and then from licking it to keep it moist, above the lip gets very red. I use vitamin E oil. you apply it with a cotton ball. it can be purchased in the vitamin aisle at any store.

I hate lip balms with menthol - they burn like mad. I use a product called "Lizard Lips" that does not have any menthol or mint products (I tried Burt's Bees - it has peppermint oil and burns!). Lizard Lips has cocoa butter and beeswax, along with grapeseed oil and other emollients; it works really well, and even tastes good ;-)
