Jesus died on a Friday.
His flesh, "meat" was offered up in sacrifice.
The Roman Catholic church decided it was disrespectful to eat any flesh, "meat" on that day.
The idea is crazy, but that's how they thought back then.
Mind you, its a boon to the fish industry.

Many years ago the fishing industry was collapsing. Many of the Catholic church members made their living from the fishing industry. So the members were hurting financially causing them to give less money making the church hurt also. To fix the situation the church decided to tell everyone to buy fish instead of meat at least one day a week and friday was the day they chose. It continued so long that it became tradition and today most people have forgotten the reason behind it and think that it actually has a spiritual reason behind it, but it doesn't.

As far fetched as this may sound it is the truth. Research it out for yourself if you don't believe me. Or ask a 80+ year old priest or nun that would remember.

It used to be and not so long ago at all that all catholics were found guilty of a serious sin if they dared eat any form of meat on any Friday of the month or year bar none and had to go to confession for a priest to forgive them until the Council (pope's big meeting with his cardinals, etc.) resulted in the fact that it was no longer a sin to eat meat on Fridays, no longer a sin for a woman to enter a church without a hat, no longer a sin to receive communion if you weren't coming out of the confession parlour, no longer a sin to miss a Sunday mass (called mess, for messe, in French!, which... is really more of an accurate description as I recall) and oh! just don't break your head about it and simply get your data from the Horse's mouth, which the true God posted all over that book, called the Bible or His inspired Word!

In general you are not supposed to eat meat on Fridays during lent to remember the poor who could not afford to buy meat which is expensive especially in ancient times.

Have you ever noticed how quickly fish spoils? So wouldn't it be nice if fishermen could count on one day a week when they could arrive back to shore with a full harvest of fish, and have enough customers to buy all their catch. - Wouldn't that be nice and efficient, and profitable to the Pope who would naturally get a kick back (under the table) from the fishermen.
