You need to check the user manual. HDMI can be used to carry both audio and video, but most TVs will NOT accept Dolby Digital via HDMI input. So, you may need to set up your source to output PCM.

Yes, but wouldn't it be better to take the HDMI feed to a multi-channel receiver that has HDMI inputs and outputs so that you can decode the Dolby-digital surround sound. I know, more equipment to buy, but isn't that part of the fun!

hdmi will carry both sound and vision digitial, so yes
